Chapter Seventeen
Brunch. When Harper had called and asked to hang out, her first thought had been brunch. A nice cup of tea, maybe a scone. Pleasant conversation.
Brunch didn’t usually take place at the local vet clinic.
Two steps behind Harper, Emerson stopped, frowning at the big dog-shaped sign. “Harper?”
“Yeah?”
She pointed at the sign and arched an eyebrow. “Is this a cute, but confusing, mascot for a quaint diner?”
Harper grinned and shrugged. “Does this look like a diner to you?”
“Is this payback for asking you to help me with my house?” She narrowed her eyes. “Because I don’t think it’s necessary. I’d be happy to compensate you with more pizza.”
“You like pineapple on your pizza,” Harper said and made a face. Emerson fought a smile. Watching her pick pineapple off her slice with an offended look had been a highlight of her evening. “It’s bring a friend to work day.”
“You’re a terrible liar,” she said and crossed her arms. “Why didn’t you tell me where we were going? Am I even wearing the right clothes for this?”
“You can borrow some sneakers, I keep a spare pair here.”
“At the vet’s office?” She narrowed her eyes. “Why?”
“Come on, Emers. It’ll be fun, I promise. Cute puppies and kitties for you to snuggle with.”
The puppy dog look Harper made wasn’t fair. Neither was the new unique nickname she’d been gifted with. Not Em, not the horrible Emmy, Emers, delivered in Harper’s trademark growl. She groaned and ducked her head. “Fine. But can we please go to lunch after? Like normal friends?”
“You’re like a magic eight ball that gives questions instead of annoyingly vague answers.” She laughed and started toward the front door again, a slight spring in her step. “We’ll hit the deli after. I won’t even make fun of the way you eat.”
“Like a normal person?” She glared at the back of Harper’s head as she followed her. “Some of us like to taste our food.”
Harper held open the door for her, grinning again. “You eat like a mouse.”
“You eat like a starved coyote.”
The grin slipped, just a little, but came back quickly. “Do I?”
She’d noticed a lot of that. A seemingly innocuous comment had the power to make Harper twitch. If they were animal comparisons, that is. Her smile would falter. She’d pause in the middle of something.
What’s going on in that head? She wanted to ask, but instead put on her best innocent expression. “Watching you eat is like watching a special on wild animals.”
There it went again, almost too small to be noticed. But she knew how to look for it now. The slight tick in the corner of Harper’s left eye.
Harper shook it off and huffed. Back to her regularly scheduled programming. She waved her hand at the open doorway. “I’ll be getting you back for that.”
“I’ll look forward to it.”
Walking into a veterinarian’s office, she expected to see furry patients and worried owners lining the walls. Like a hospital ER for quadrupeds. Instead, she faltered once inside. Because there weren’t rows of chairs filled with owners and a variety of pets.
